Research suggests that this phenomenon is linked to gay men’s tendency to openly discriminate against other gay men who express a gender outside of traditional masculinity. For many gay men, Facebook and Instagram and gay-specific dating apps are hotbeds of body image struggles and online gender-based discrimination. Within our research, we seek to understand and illuminate femmephobic attitudes. Dating apps: hotbeds of body image struggles The posts raise alarms for us because we believe they are part of a growing culture of gay men glorifying femmephobia and elements of toxic masculinity. They also echo widespread issues of body dysmorphia (the obsessive feeling that a part of your body is flawed) and include fat-shaming or inadvertently praise disordered eating. Life is short: remember that everyone is different, and some characteristics that some people display are more attractive to some people than others.As we scroll through these posts, especially by gay men, we believe many sentiments expressed reveal a deep femmephobia within LGBTQ+ communities. Our world is that much better for the variances of the diversity of our population. Not all gay guys like all other gay guys. Same is true in the gay world: gay men are different. Just like in the straight world: women are different. Some behave in a more effeminate manner while others do not. Let’s suffice it to say that all gay men are not the same. What masculine gay men find attractive, therefore, is someone who behaves like he does.īTW, I am deliberately leaving out much of the stereotyping of gay men in general. A masculine gay man behaves that way as well. A masculine man is secure and confident, capable, active, and independent. Some guys have more observable physical characteristics of “maleness” than others. Masculine characteristics vary, just as people vary. Masculine gay men are capable, active, and “do-ers.” They can do various things from repairing a car, riding a motorcycle, or playing sports, to activities like watching the game with the guys, being a good uncle, or to volunteering at a community organization or church.Masculine gay men prefer to socialize with the wider world. Many masculine gay men have said that they are attracted to other masculine gay men who do not feel as if they must socialize only with gay men.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but an attractive masculine man will have physical characteristics that work for him, and with which he is comfortable.
